About
Shakiru
Originally from Nigeria, Shakiru Matti obtained a Diploma
Degree specializing in Physical and Health Education from
the University of Lagos. He has since applied his knowledge
from university to his lifelong love of squash.
Shakiru
is a highly qualified and experienced coach in both
North and South America. From 2000 to 2001 he was the
coach for the Mexican national team where he coached
Eric Galvez to his current top 34 world ranking. From
2001 to 2005 Shakiru coached the Guatemalan national
team into major events that included the Pan American
games.
He
instructed in the United States at the prestigious Princeton
Summer Squash Camps and he continues to contribute to
development of the game in Vancouver, Canada. In 2006
he coached Carolyn Russell to a top 50 world ranking
and to a Canadian National Championship. He currently
works with many exceptional athletes including PSA player
Jeff Evans and BC#1 ranked and Provincial Champion 2008,
U17 player Remington Hall.
In
addition to coaching adults, Shakiru has a firm commitment
to developing squash at the youth level primarily through
his junior squash program. In February 2008 he was assigned
as the Head Coach for the zone 4 team at the BC winter
games. He continues to organize camps and tournaments
with a focus on junior development and involvement.
Since 2006 he is the Head Squash Professional at Fitness
Unlimited Richmond BC.
Shakiru
is also an accomplished player, reaching a ranking of
#3 in British Columbia and #13 in Canada in 2007.
